Kudos to daughter Lauren Hartman, and to all of the participants who ran, walked, stumbled, and crawled through the woods today.
The Mountain Junkies put on a great race entitled CONQUER THE COVE.
This race was the 9th CtC ,with an estimate of 350 runners!
'Mountain Junkies L.L.C. is home of the trail running and mountain biking junkies of the Roanoke Valley.'
This trail running 25k and marathon expedition was not for the faint of heart. 😅.
Thank goodness the 6:30am start time temperatures were cooler than the previous week.
The picturesque starting and finishing point was at the Loch Haven Lake Club.
Miles and miles of trails were easily accessed.... some easy, some hard, and some very difficult..... all showing off the area surrounding the beautiful Carvins Cove Natural Reserve.
Mind you, we were JUST SPECTATORS here. It was easy to cheer these trail runners on. But honestly, I cannot imagine the amount of training and planning, that goes into doing one of these things. REALLY? running UP this dirt path? walking? Can you see me shaking my head????

The elevation for this event was brutal! No wonder she was smiling as she passed by at mile 5!
A bit of humor was provided for the runners, since bears and snakes are always a concern 👀
Lauren was ready to Conquer The Cove.
It was beginning to get light when the race began at the scenic Loch Haven Lake
She managed a big smile as she ran by us, at mile 5ish.
(Thank to Jay Proffitt for the photo above and below)
SHE DID IT. 25K (15.5 miles)!
and she wanted to do it!
and she worked and trained!
and she FINISHED!
It wasn’t the prettiest, but I conquered the Cove this morning 🙌🏼 There was a lot of hiking the last 7 miles, but I finished the race I said I would never do at the beginning of this year 😁 The 1000ft 2.4 mile climb up Brushy Mountain starting at mile 8 seemed to go on and on and on, and the technical downhill on The Gauntlet was just as difficult on dead legs. Total elevation gain was 2440ft. All of it was made a little worse by blisters on both feet starting at mile 7 😩 I didn’t have to worry about my @tailwindnutrition getting hot this time because I’d drained it all by mile 12 😳 (glad I had brought a soft flask to keep some extra water in though!). It was perfect weather ☀️ and the trails, though obviously difficult, were beautiful. The volunteers and race support was 💯👏🏼The race HQ at Loch Haven lake was such a nice place to chill for a little while and cheer on the other runners...and that post-race 🍔 totally hit the spot. My finish time for 15.9 miles was 3:48 (14:22 pace). I’m proud of my effort today, but there’s plenty of room for improvement next year 😉 #trailrunning #trailrace#trailrunner #25K #conquerthecove #conquerthecove2019 #mountainjunkies#runmountains #carvinscove #lochhavenlake #tailwindnutrition #gotailwind#mindovermatterathlete #hokaoneone #hokaspeedgoat #nathansports @ Carvins Cove Natural Reserve
Can you see me beaming from here????
I thought so 😀😀😀😀😀.
PS.
This was not Lauren's first race...... and more than likely it will not be her last.
She has completed 14 events with the Mountain Junkies L.L.C!

Ya gotta laugh at this humorous cartoon. I suspect there is a little bit of truth here 😀😀😀
